New Local Underground Cinema

Underground cinema is live and well in the bay area, with the birth Black Hole Cinematheque in Oakland, and Delirium Cinema at 'New Nothing Cinema' (which itself operated from 1982 through 2009ish) near 7th and Folsom in sf. Showcasing independent, cult and foreign cinema et al., these projects situate themselves well outside of the traditional movie experience, not the least of which because they generally do not charge. I attended a screening at Black Hole for the first time, of Tarkovsky's Stalker, and was very pleased with the experience. Arriving unfashionably on time at the venue, housed in a thoroughly converted 70s(?) church in which many people live and music events are held, my date and I snagged a pair of comfy armchairs for the film. Music from the soundtrack was played, and the host (whose name I forget) had set out a large selection of books about the director of the film and Russian cinema and arts in general, and he had even gone so far as to assemble a small zine of text and interviews for guests to take, along with xeroxed posters for this (and previous) screenings. All this plus a bring your own beer situation, a quality digital projection of the film, and a nice intro by the host, for free. It started late, and the film, at almost three hours, ended around midnight. There was a good turnout, and the crowd post-film was half dazed-half amazed, trying to collect coats and bags and to regain their bearings before heading home.
